L-Arginine vs. Natural Herbs: What Supports Blood Flow?

← Back to Blog HorseWood 3 bottle bundle

L-arginine is probably the most talked-about "blood flow" supplement ingredient online. Here's how it actually compares to the traditional botanicals in HorseWood.

How L-Arginine Works

L-arginine is an amino acid and the direct precursor to nitric oxide — the body converts it into NO, which relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow. A multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that long-term, high-dose L-arginine significantly improved erectile function scores in men with vasculogenic ED, particularly mild-to-moderate cases. Smaller trials have shown similar, more modest results.

The Catch: Dose and Absorption

The trials showing benefit generally used high doses (several grams per day), and L-arginine has notably poor oral bioavailability — much of it gets broken down before it ever reaches the bloodstream, which is part of why results across studies are inconsistent.

Both L-arginine and icariin point at the same target — nitric oxide — from different biochemical angles.

How Icariin (Horny Goat Weed) Compares

Rather than supplying the raw material for nitric oxide, icariin has been shown in lab research to increase eNOS expression — essentially supporting the enzyme that produces nitric oxide, a different mechanism aimed at the same outcome. Most icariin research is preclinical (lab and animal), while L-arginine has more human trial data, though still limited by small sample sizes on both sides.

Where This Leaves You

Neither ingredient is a proven cure for erectile dysfunction, and both should be discussed with a doctor if you're on blood pressure medication, since both can affect blood pressure. HorseWood is built around Horny Goat Weed rather than high-dose L-arginine, on the basis that a well-rounded traditional botanical blend — paired with lifestyle basics like exercise and diet — is a more sustainable approach than chasing one mega-dosed ingredient.
